Thanksgiving is its own holiday, Bitch!

Believe it or not, I think Thanksgiving is tied with Christmas as one of my most favorite holidays ever! Crazy right? No, but think about it. Thanksgiving has an awesome parade in Manhattan, football, the amazing food (obviously), and the usual family get togethers. However, one thing that causes me to slightly resent Christmas is the pushing around of the turkey day. Whenever I go to any store that sells seasonal merchandise, Thanksgiving gets a small section while Christmas gets dedicated isles. Just go to any CVS or Rite Aid and you’ll see all of the dissin’ that occurs. They really have to stop being greedy. Keep it real, partner. Give to the needy.  And so on and so forth.

At work today, the light music station was playing Christmas music, but there’s no way I can enjoy it because Thanksgiving has not arrived yet.

So to honor Thanksgiving, I have searched the web and I’m posting links to all kind of Thanksgiving stuff. It helps to get into the Thanksgiving spirit. Just click the picture.

Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving

I think most people have seen this special because it has become a classic. I guess the moral of the story is to cheap out when it comes to your friends and save the good stuff for your friends. Although, that Thanksgiving dinner menu is kinda cool.

Garfield’s Thanksgiving

I’ll admit, I have never seen this special until a few years ago when I bought the Garfield’s Holiday DVD. It’s a shame too, because I know I would’ve enjoyed it as a kid. It also had an effect on me now because I always sing the theme song on Thanksgiving, “Do the mash potato, do the candy yam! Do the funky turkey cause it’s time to jam.”

The Simpsons Thanksgiving

I’m sure everyone has seen this episode of the Simpsons. I assume the story is supposed to bring awareness to the hungry on this holiday.  I do feel sorry for homeless, especially on this day. I think everyone should be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner. Also, am I the only one who gets sick of Lisa’s badgering of social awareness? Take a damn chill pill. I’ll even pay for it!

Simpsons Thanksgiving

Sitcom Specials

Ok, I never seen the next three shows, but I heard it through the grapevine that they were classic Thanksgiving episodes as well. I’ll probably watch them sometime this week, but I’ll post them anyway. It’s all about getting into this holiday’s spirit.

Happy Days

Full House

Rick Roll!

I think this was the coolest idea for a Thanksgiving parade. Millions of viewers got Rick Rolled in the 2008 parade. However, they kinda blew it when the announcers stated that there was going to be a surprise. I had a feeling it was the Rick Roll because Rick Astley’s name was in the beginning’s credits of the parade broadcast.

Q-Bert Thanksgiving Episode

This brings me back. Although I never saw the Thanksgiving episode, I used to watch Q-Bert all the time and had the game for Atari 5200. I don’t remember if it was part of the Saturday Supercade or if it stood on its own. Either way, I used to love this.

Hey Arnold’s Thanksgiving

Again, I never saw this episode before, but I used to love Hey Arnold. My little brother used to watch it and eventually I got hooked. It usually has a good message as well. Arnold was one cool-ass dude.

Hey Arnold

Thanksgiving Carols

This is a youtube video that has two people who changed Christmas song lyrics to reflect Thanksgiving. Although I’d prefer Thanksgiving carols with original lyrics, I give them props because the songs were kinda funny and would probably be cool to sing while in a drunken stupor.

Thanksgiving History in America

Instead of a video, this link posts to a Wikipedia page that has information about Thanksgiving history in the United States. I think that it is important to understand the roots of this great holiday. Remember, knowing is half the battle.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Everything that you would want to know about the parade is in this webpage. I live in NYC and I even learned some trivia about its history. A very useful link, especially for those who are going to see the parade in person.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with minimal music

I never seen anything like this before. It’s a video of the 2007 parade with minimal techno music playing. It’s kind of a different perspective on the parade and I enjoyed it. Kind of reminded me of my past raver days. I remember one time leaving a party in a club near 34th st in Manhattan at 6am and seeing people starting to get their spaces on the sidewalk to watch the Thanksgiving Day parade go by. That was kinda weird, yet cool. If I wasn’t dead-ass tired, I probably would’ve stayed.

Good Eats: Romancing the Bird

Good Eats with Alton Brown is an awesome show. The dude is very smart when it comes to food, and he does not disappoint with this holiday special. A bunch of his relatives show up for the side story, but the main show is focused on making a perfect turkey. My wife tried Alton’s techniques one Thanksgiving and she never looked back. It comes out perfect every time. Yummy!

Vincent Price’s Thanksgiving

This Saturday Night Live short places Vincent Price in a Thanksgiving show even though he still has the spooky set. It’s good for a laugh.

Thanksgiving Movie Trailer

The trailer for this movie is not real. It was part of the trailers in the Grindhouse movie by Quentin Tarantino. This definitely looks like a movie that I would watch. It has some gruesome kills and even uses some music from the movie Creepshow.  This movie really needs to be made.

Johnny Cash Thanksgiving Prayer

This clip has Johnny Cash singing a song of Thanksgiving on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. I never watched the show but hey, it has Johnny Cash. He is the man. It’s a nice song too.

Thanksgiving Meal Cooked In An Easy-Bake Oven

It’s basically what the title says. Some maniac cooked a Thanksgiving dinner in these toy ovens. It took forever and the portions were small. I guess someone had to do it.

A Mad TV Brittney and Kevin Skit

Brittney and Kevin shoots a video on Thanksgiving and Brittney shows it to the audience. Just think of a super white-trash meal and you’ll probably see what is shown here.

Xbox Thanksgiving Commercial

It’s an Xbox commercial that takes place on Thanksgiving. I only post it because it has a surprise ending that even caught me off guard. Worth a quick look-see.

Thanksgiving Songs and Videos

This last link is basically user-created videos on youtube about Thanksgiving. The link sends you to a playlist so that you can watch the videos automatically.

Whew. So that’s the links that I can find to put one in a Thanksgiving mood. Christmas is a monstrosity of a holiday, so it’s cool to give Thanksgiving its props. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Eat, drink, and be merry.

I work at CVS and I’m very disappointed at the lack of Turkey Day love. All we had this year were Turkeys made out of hollow chocolate and we sold out of them on Monday.

There’s also the fact that while the Thanksgiving episodes of Garfield, Peanuts & Simpsons are quite good, they’re outclassed by the Halloween & Christmas versions in every possible way.

Also, last year I created my own Thanksgiving special, with a Bob-omb character I have named Dennis: http://galileo908.blogspot.com/2008/11/very-dennis-thanksgiving-special.html
